Vertical drill machines are the most widely used in metalworking. They are used to make holes in relatively small work-pieces in individual and small-lot production; they are also used in maintenance shops. The tool, such as a drill, countersink, or reamer, is fastened on a vertical spindle, and the work-piece is secured on the table of the machine. The axes of the tool and the hole to be drilled are aligned by moving the workpiece. Programmed control is also used to orient the workpiece and to automate the operation. Bench-mounted machines, usually of the single-spindle type, are used to make holes up to 12 mm in diameter, for instance, in instrument-making.

A deep hole is defined as one that is a minimum of 10 times its diameter in depth. On the maximum side, a deep hole drilling is generally capable of drilling to a depth of 100 to 150 times its diameter. And hole deeper than 10 times the diameter should certainly be considered a deep hole, requiring a specialised drilling technique. Deep hole drilling are characterized by high material removal rate plus high accuracy with regard to the straightness of the hole, surface finish and dimensional tolerances. The extreme conditions which apply when drilling deep holes place high demands on the tool, machine and associated equipment.
1.The main difference between drilling, boring and reaming is that drilling is when you make a brand new hole in your work piece. But boring is when you enlarge the hole. When you give a finishing touch to your hole that means you are reaming. Giving a finishing touch to the hole means making the hole smoother. 2.Next thing about the three processes is that they have individual tools for them. The process of drilling uses a drill bit. But the boring process uses a lathe and reaming uses reamers. So there is also a difference in terms of tools. 3.The process of boring always comes after the drilling. And reaming comes at last. The sequence is always the same. You cannot bore until you drill. And you cannot ream until you bore. So by drilling, you can directly have a hole you want. But boring and reaming are the helping processes. Or they are the processes that will make a better hole.
